Courses & Assignments
Courses & Assignments templates organize courses and their assignments and map that work to curriculum competencies. Admins manage them under Templates → Courses & Assignments.
Overview
Open Templates → Courses & Assignments, create or edit a template, optionally select a Competency Map, then add courses and assignments. You can import from Canvas (when connected) or from a spreadsheet.
Create a template
- Go to Templates → Courses & Assignments.
- Create a template and name it (program, term, or catalog year).
- Optionally select a Competency Map for assignment mapping.
- Add courses (name and optional code), then add assignments under each course.
- Map assignments to competencies as needed.
Courses with matching codes are linked rather than duplicated when possible, so keep codes consistent.
Courses and assignments
For each course: name, optional code, and links to classrooms or evaluation templates when you use those links for planning and reporting.
For each assignment: name, optional external ID (for example from Canvas), description, and competency mappings.
Expand a course to manage its assignments. Drag assignments between courses when you need to reorganize.
Import
Canvas
If Canvas is connected under Settings:
- Choose Import → Import from Canvas.
- Search and select courses and assignments.
- Import selected items (large imports may take a few minutes).
Canvas assignment IDs are preserved when possible for later sync awareness.
Spreadsheet
- Choose Import and upload
.xlsx,.xls, or.csv. - Include course and assignment name columns (and optional codes/descriptions).
- Download the sample template first if you are unsure of the format.
Competency mapping
With a Competency Map selected:
- Open mapping on an assignment.
- Search and select competencies or subcompetencies.
- Prefer a focused set of direct alignments per assignment.
Optional AI map-one or map-all may be available when educator AI is enabled—review before accreditation use.
Tips
- Import from Canvas when the LMS is the source of truth; use spreadsheets for one-off catalogs.
- Stabilize the Competency Map before large mapping passes.
- Link courses to classrooms only when that relationship helps reporting.
- Keep assignment names clear—they appear in mapping and agent reports.
Troubleshooting
Courses & Assignments tab missing
Confirm you are an admin on a plan that includes curriculum features (typically not vision-only or starter-only).
Canvas import failed
Verify Canvas is configured in Settings, you can access the courses in Canvas, and try a smaller batch if rate limits appear.
Cannot map competencies
Select a Competency Map on the template and confirm it has objectives defined.
Spreadsheet import failed
Use the downloadable sample, keep required columns, and fix empty course/assignment names.
